"Thieves have been stealing the 420 mile marker sign so often, the state's transportation department has changed it to "419.99" in an effort to try and stop the problem.

A photo of the 419.99 mile marker sign, which is about 148 miles on Interstate 70 east of Denver, began circulating on twitter through the @JournalistsLike twitter account on Friday.

"So this is our way to test it out. So far it's working," said Amy Ford, a spokesperson with the Colorado Department of Transportation. "It's a traffic safety thing. It's a helpful thing to have these sings on the road. But people kept ripping them off."

The number 420 is often used as a reference to smoking marijuana.

The 419.99 sign has been put up within the last year Ford said.

Ford also says they've had problems with thieves stealing the 69 mile marker sign in the past."

I think I'd rather have this new sign.

Bigger question, did they move the sign .01 miles to keep it accurate?

Exactly. See?

Read in Nick Swardson's voice:

"Say brah, know what time it is?"

points to 419.99 sign

"Almost, brah, almost"

I was a teen in the early 90's and it was used then. Not sure when it first became a fad though.

Edit: Wiki says 1971 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/420

When I would have, ahem, known of it, it was early to mid 80's. I gave it up when I got married in 1990. What does it refer to?

They were having problems with"Exit signs" along I70 and I25 for a few years (class of 78-99). I was in the class of 81 and someone hung the exit 81 sign over the stadium tunnel our class used after graduation.

I've heard multiple stories, but I edited my reply with the wiki post. Of course any knowledge I may or may not have had at the time was simply 2nd hand or for "informational" purposes only.

Anyone who manages to steal that sign deserves to have it

I've heard it was (still is?) a code used by some police departments to refer to marijuana usage. i.e. "dispatch, I've got a 420 on main street, 2 individuals in possession of marijuana." I have no idea of that's true though.
